Book Rail-Trails Southern New England: The definitive guide to multiuse trails in Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island Review :

I just received this and have not had a chance to explore new places with it, but on first glance it's very cumbersome to use as a guide. It has colored page corners but all the states share the same color - they could have at least color-coded them by state, or better yet placed color-coded, offset tabs along the outer margins with the associated map number to be able to quickly navigate to the trail you want. Instead, you must page through the book hunting for the random spot where the states begin. There you will find an overview map for each state, but there's no master map for the entire contents of the guide, and given how small states are in New England, this would have been useful for planning trips in the region. The trails on the state maps are marked with numbered blocks, with the numbers assigned in alphabetical order - NOT lines to depict how long each trail might be - so if you want to find, say, some long rides, you have to go through the book and read the trail descriptions to find them. The trails near each other in a given state are scattered through the book - and the numbers on the map have nothing to do with page numbers - another lost opportunity to make the whole thing far more user-friendly. As a professional mapmaker and member of the Rails to Trails Conservancy, I'm frustrated that they would produce a guide book in which the maps contain so little information and are so divorced from the book's content, and even more distressed to think all their other guide books may suffer from these many same fundamental issues! To partly make up for this, the text on the trails I do know is informative and accurate. But the lack of cross-referencing and an orderly, user-friendly layout will make me think twice before dropping more cash on another of their paper guides...
This is indeed the latest version and has a number of updated trail, among my favorite on Cape Cod. Great organization, well worth the support.
